I wonder often if Candyland on Wabasha Street is the only post-theater candy store in America. It stays open until 10 o’clock every night but Sunday. Then it closes at 9. It only lists one holiday on its website. “Our Holiday Hours: Dec. 24th, 8-4 PM and Dec 25th Closed.” And there’s a line to the door even after 9 o’clock at night.
For all the changes in my home town’s downtown — the book stores are gone, the department stores are gone, the big publisher down the street is gone — this place just keeps churning out the popcorn, handing over the melty mints, scooping up the cinnamon bears like its 1932 or 1972 or 2002. I think the oak cabinetry and red tile floor might date back 40 years or more.
I suddenly realized, stopping by after a play at the Park Square Theater tonight, that I will probably be standing at that same counter with my grandchildren some day, waiting to hand over a few bucks for those white paper sacks with the tops scrunched up, shaking each one, trying to tell which is which.
